V2X Technology is Here.
Will Your City Be Ready?
The adoption of the Cellular-V2X standard will increase the number of connected vehicles on city roadways. To help prepare, Fortran and its contest partners BlackBerry and Cradlepoint are pleased to support the 2021 Connected Intersection Challenge.
Submit Your Application Today And Be Testing V2X Solutions In Your City This Summer!
Fortran Traffic Systems Limited (Fortran) and its 2021 Connected intersection Challenge partners BlackBerry® and Cradlepoint are pleased to provide the opportunity for Canadian cities to test and evaluate next generation V2X mobility solutions to send and receive signals from an intersection to vehicles, pedestrians, or cyclists.
Up to five cities will be selected to participate in the Challenge. The cities will be announced at the ITS Canada Virtual Conference held between June 21-22, 2021. Finalists will receive software, equipment, training, and support to deploy a pilot of Fortran’s patented and award-winning V2X mobility solution(s) at a designated intersection or corridor in their city in support of a connected vehicle signal priority system and/or a smart work or smart school zone.
All Connected Intersection Challenge applicants must agree to follow the terms and conditions for the Challenge (the “Rules”) prior to submitting an online application to nominate their city. By entering the Challenge, you agree to abide by the rules and decisions of Fortran. You also agree to comply with all applicable laws. The Challenge is void to the extent prohibited or restricted by law.
This contest is in response to the recent OGRA (Ontario Good Roads Association) 2019-20 survey findings which reported that 74% of municipalities had not yet established an CV/AV working group and 30% indicated they were waiting for other municipalities to do something first.
As reported by a majority of municipalities surveyed, the top three reasons are: lack of technical resources, lack of funding and insufficient knowledge/understanding. Encouragingly, in that same survey, nearly 90% indicated they had not taken a course on CV/AVs with more than half stating they would like to.
As a result, the purpose of the 2021 Connected Intersection Challenge is: (1) to build awareness of next generation mobility management systems and connected vehicle technologies, and (2) to contribute toward building the V2X knowledge and hands-on technical experience across Canada’s municipalities so they can benefit from the latest advancements in intelligent transportation systems.
