Naztec Lamp Monitoring System

The Naztec Lamp Monitoring System consists of a card cage with a lamp monitoring circuit board, a precision current transformer for current detection, special lamp monitoring controller firmware, and all necessary wires and cables to monitor all lamps at an intersection.

Lamp monitoring is important and necessary to provide early notification of situations that may result in intersections going to “Flash” or pedestrians being injured or killed. It also improves safety at an intersection by helping maintenance personnel keep all signal indications at an intersection working. Finally, it can extend the period scheduled for the purpose of relamping to prevent burnouts. This reduces maintenance costs.

Lamp monitoring prevents intersection flash by automatically detecting individual lamp failures and reporting them. Without this notification, all of the lamps of a traffic phase color may burn out before the first one is detected and replaced. When this occurs, the conflict monitor senses the condition as a conflict and places the intersection on flash. By receiving notification of a single lamp failure, maintenance personnel may replace the bulb before the remaining lamp or lamps of the same phase color burn out.Left-hand turn bays often have only a single indication, or lamp, per phase color. When one of these lamps burn out, the intersection will go to flash If the lamp begins to fail intermittently, this intermittent failure may be detected and allow the bulb to be replaced before it fails completely.

Pedestrian safety is particularly enhanced because there is often only one Walk and Don’t Walk indication that a pedestrian can easily view for a direction of crossing. Since a failure of one of these lamps may not cause the intersection to flash, there would be no pedestrian indication for an indefinite period of time. Without lamp monitoring, there is no means to detect these failed lamps other than a site inspection by maintenance personnel or to rely on a citizen to report it.
